“Mapping the Metaphorical and Uncanny Narrative of Balthus’s Painting Passage Du Commerce Saint Andre, through The Alley an Animated Fictional Interpretation of the Former.”
The communicative nature of the arts is foundational to the expressive therapies, particularly regarding the client’s ability to meaningfully express themselves to others and to the therapist’s mediation of the client’s therapeutic needs through arts engagement. This process is typically described as though the therapist’s interpretation of the client’s work makes nonverbal communication possible. In reality, both therapist and client are engaged in a process of learning how to listen to and understand the other. This is facilitated by the common processes shared among the arts in therapy.
This 6-hour master class will explore the unique opportunities that the arts offer for co-creating nonverbal communication during treatment. To accomplish this, we'll be discussing theory regarding listening, interpreting, and responding; presenting case examples and arts-based research; and engaging in arts experiences that will increase awareness of how one’s chosen art form allows for the negotiation of nonverbal, co-created meaning that contributes to its efficacy in the clinical setting.
The Expressive Therapies Summit, a 501c3 nonprofit, offers continuing education for clinicians in all mental health disciplines, as well as educators, students, and community-based professionals. These hands-on trainings emphasize best practices featuring the arts therapies. All are taught by highly skilled professionals, including pioneers in various fields. In this way, we seek to extend the healing power of the arts to people of all ages and abilities throughout the world.
